Strike: Reps, NEMA DG, union leaders meet on implementation of agreement

The management of the National Emergency Management Agency and union leaders met with the House of Representatives on Monday , where the warring parties agreed to the implementation of a peace agreement .
Workers of the agency had on Friday suspended a three - day warning strike after a public outcry greeted the development.
The workers had gone on strike to protest welfare issues , including alleged refusal of the management to pay overtime allowances; refusal to renew personal life assurance ; refusal to train staff annually ; and vindictive posting of staff , among others.
It took the intervention of the Minister of Labour and Employment , Dr . Chris Ngige , for the workers to soft - pedal.
The House Committee on Disaster Preparedness , which also intervened in the industrial dispute , had summoned the Director -General of NEMA, Mr . Mustapha Maihaja, and the union leaders to an emergency meeting in Abuja .
The NEMA chapter Chairman of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria , Mr . Sa ’ ad Bello , spoke for the workers at the session .
The committee , which was chaired by a member from Borno State , Mr . Satumari Jibrin , had said it was a “ big embarrassment” to the nation to hear that emergency workers’ agency like NEMA were on strike .
“ NEMA is involved in many activities in the country where there are emergencies .
“ We have the challenge of Internally Displaced Persons in camps all over the place.
“ It is not good news to hear that NEMA personnel are on strike , ” the committee chairman stated.
However , the DG and the union leaders told lawmakers that an agreement had been reached to ensure that the strike did not repeat itself .
