Delta policeman who shot student over N1,000 arrested *DPO, team leader get queries


The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a policeman who allegedly shot a polytechnic student, Sofia Ogogo, and a civil servant, Victor Emeagwai, at a checkpoint in Ibusa near Asaba, the state capital.
The policeman, attached to the Igbuzo Police Division, had reportedly fled after the incident.
The arrest of the policeman, Sgt. Sampson Abuo (F/No. 424188) was confirmed by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, on Friday.
Abuo shot Ogogo while he was in company with four other policemen at the checkpoint set up along Ibusa Market road.
The Toyota Corolla car in which the victim was in was driven by an estate agent, Jerry Akinlabi.
According to a statement signed by the spokesperson for the command, Mr. Andrew Aniamaka, on Friday, the divisional police officer in charge of the area and the officer who led the team to the checkpoint had also been queried by the command over the incident.
The development is coming after The PUNCH reported the case on Thursday.
The CP vowed that the command would ensure that justice was served in the incident.
Ibrahim said, “The four members of the team have been arrested for not preventing the escape of the culprit.
“The sum of N100,000 was made available to enable immediate treatment of the victim.Investigation immediately commenced and photographs and other documentary evidences were taken by the police to be attached to the case diary.
“The vehicle was released on bond to the driver, who had insisted it be released to him.”
“We want to reassure the victims and their families and the general public that the command, under our watch, will never do anything to scuttle the course of justice.”
